Japanese publisher Fukkan has released this beautiful storyboard book for Hiroyuki Okiura’s highly acclaimed anime film Jin-roh The Wolf Brigade ( released back in 1999 ). This is the first time the storyboards have been released as a proper publication; previously a small version was also bundled with the Jin-roh limited edition dvd.

Included in the book are a couple of sketches and colored illustrations that were used in the various video releases, as well as a lengthy interview with director Hiroyuki Okiura ( divided into 3 sections; in Japanese language only ).

The print quality of the storyboards are excellent – images are crisp and clean and you can really make out the intricate line-work of the pencil drawings; the storyboards are also incredibly detailed; definitely on par with that of Satoshi Kon and Miyazaki.

For me Jin-roh ranks high on my list of favorite anime films, right up there with masterpieces like Patlabor 2 The Movie and Ghost In The Shell. This storyboard book is a perfect opportunity to re-visit this great film, and at the same time it serves as an excellent study/resource for Hiroyuki Okiura’s composition techniques. My highest recommendations.
