Imaginary Japan is the 3rd art book ( read my review for his 1st art book and 2nd art book ) by Japanese illustrator Yasushi Suzuki 鈴木康士, whose expansive portfolio covers art work for video games, novels and magazines. His list of credits include titles like The Mysterious Thief ( since adapted into a Japanese TV series ), Psychic Detective Yakumo and Game Of Thrones (Japanese edition), as well as game art for Ikaruga, Zone Of The Enders, Sin & Punishment: Star Successor, LORD of VERMILION 〜Re:2 and more.
As the title suggests, this 3rd volume focuses on imagined themes and genres of Japan; samurai warriors and ronin, as well as characters inspired by Japanese folklore and mythology. Also included with the book is a data disc that contains his illustration work breakdowns, unreleased rough work as well as black and white drawings.
(above & below) One of my fav pieces from this book, this is the key illustration used for the Japanese RPG Yomiwosakuhana ( 黄泉ヲ裂ク華 ).
Yasushi Suzuki’s accomplished and unique art style brings a fascinating take on Japanese folklore and the period genre. This is an excellent companion to his earlier art book Eyes as well as Twilight. Recommended.
