The Hobbit : The Desolation Of Smaug Chronicles : Art & Design takes a comprehensive look at the expansive concept art developed for part 2 of Peter Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy. The book is filled from cover to cover with detailed concept paintings and sketches for the sets, backgrounds, characters and creatures.
(above) Character concept art for Beorn, the shapeshifting werebear. He’s my favourite character in Hobbit.
(above & below) Elaborate and painfully intricate drawings by 2 long time concept artists/directors who have worked on Lord Of The Rings/Hobbit, Alan Lee & John Howe.
(above) Character concept designs for the female elf Tauriel. My impressions on her are mixed – she was never in the book but I guess the film needed a female character to balance the all male cast. ( In LOTR we had Galadriel, Arwen & Eoywn )
(above left) Love this character design for Bard.
A superb collection of high quality concept art from Desolation Of Smaug, this is an easy recommendation and a great companion to the film. A 2nd volume, Cloak & Daggers will feature work by Weta Workshop and will be released in July.

Aside from the obviousness of the money-grabbing, making three long movies out of one short book, inserting female characters were they weren’t there, I’m especially confused on why these movies werent’ just made into animations if they wanted to have so much CG content.
