The Art & Design of FINAL FANTASY XV Book Review

This is actually a book that I’ve had my eyes on for a long time now – The Art & Design of FINAL FANTASY XV. I really enjoyed the 2016 Final Fantasy fully CG animated film Kingsglaive that was quite the visual feast and I’ve been looking for the official art book ever since. This book was released back in 2017 but I could never find stock on Amazon, or it was sold only by marketplace sellers at too high a price for me.

This giant hardcover volume covers material from the Kingsglaive film as well as the Final Fantasy XV game ( the story picks up where Kingsglaive ends ), 220 pages of content split in about equal parts. The publisher Cook and Becker did a fantastic job with the layout and design of the book, which really complements the beautifully reproduced art work showcased, a good mix of final CG rendered models, concept art, sketches and more. Fully leveraging the unusually large format of the book, the reproduced art work are featured in full on each page, rather than split in the middle had it been of a smaller print size.

One of the biggest highlights of the film is the climatic battle at the end between the dead kings of the Old Wall and the Niflheim daemons, and the character designs for both can be found in this book. The beautiful CG renders of some of the key characters like Lunafrey are certainly sweet eye candy as well.

Just like the film itself, this book is a visual feast and celebration of the beautiful design elements of the Final Fantasy franchise. On top of the great content, the physical quality of the book is fantastic, a good well done by the publisher Cook and Becker. At $49.99, I say this is fantastic value. Highly recommended.
