Hellboy and the BPRD - The Return of Effie Kolb Comic Review

It seems I can never get enough of the exploits of Hellboy and BPRD ( Bureau Of Paranormal, Research & Defence ), so it absolutely thrills me that Mike Mignola has crafted such an elaborate and expansive comic universe that I can continue to immerse in, and Hellboy and the BPRD – The Return of Effie Kolb is the latest I’ve gotten my hands on.

Long time readers of Hellboy will no doubt recognize the name Effie Kolb, who first appeared in the Hellboy story The Crooked Man, drawn with relish by Richard Corben. The story was also recently adapted into a live-action film.

Another thing which I love about these Hellboy omnibus stories are the great artist talents bought in to realize the comic, which is an excellent way for me to discover new artists and their work. In this volume I am also thrilled to find that the singular Adam Hughes is also one of the featured artists for the story The Seven Wives Club. If you are new to Adam Hughes’ work, I highly recommend checking out his art book Cover Run.

Publisher book synopsis – Travel from the Appalachian mountains to Russia, France, and all the way back to Savannah, Georgia as Hellboy returns to take on phantoms, demons, and reanimated foes.

Collected in one volume for the first time, revisit some of the most beloved Hellboy short stories, including The Return of Effie Kolb, Long Night at Goloski Station, The Seven Wives Club, Her Fatal Hour and The Sending.

Dive into these harrowing adventures with Hellboy creator Mike Mignola as he’s joined by artists Zach Howard, Matt Smith, Tiernen Trevallion, and Adam Hughes, along with colorist Dave Stewart, for a stellar fright fest!

(above right) The Seven Wives Club by Adam Hughes. His super stylish poses and expressive facial expressions are impossible to miss, and I’m a huge fan.

(above & below) A small sketches/concept art section is also included at the end of the book, a regular feature now in these Hellboy universe omnibus volumes and something I always enjoy looking at.

The Return of Effie Kolb is the latest omnibus volume to add to my ever increasing collection of the Mignola Universe titles ( of which I have reviewed many ), and I find such pleasure as to be able to just pick up one of them every now and then for a good weekend read. Recommended.

DISTRAKT

Sizzler!

I bought two units of ‘The Seven Wives Club’ when it was first announced during previews. This is because Adam rarely handles the interior art. I also bought ‘Krampus Night,’ one in the black and white cover and the other in the colored version of ‘The Seven Wives Club.
