Guillermo Del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities is a fascinating collection of the director’s ideas, sketches and thoughts, poured out on paper. Through these materials we get to explore and re-examine each of Del Toro’s films, from his earlier works like Cronos, The Devil’s Backbone, Mimic to the bigger studio films like Hellboy 1 & 2, Pans Labyrinth and Pacific Rim.
(above) Storyboards for Blade II, illustrated by Hellboy artist Mike Mignola, whose work I enjoy immensely. (below) Creature designs for the reaper. Blade II was really the film that put Del Toro on my radar with its impressionable character designs, especially for the Blood Pack.
This book is a treasure trove of ideas and visuals from one of the most innovative directors working out there today. My highest recommendations.
