Eiko Ishioka (石岡 瑛子 1938-2012) was a Japanese art director, costume designer, and graphic designer known for her work in stage, screen, advertising, and print media. She is notably renowned for her Academy award winning costume design for Francis Ford Coppola’s 1992 horror film Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
This book is the official catalogue for the retrospective exhibition held at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo from Nov 2020 – Feb 2021 and showcases a veritable treasure trove of material from Eiko Ishioka’s prolific and impressive portfolio, including print ads that she art directed for Japan’s popular Parco shopping chain, costume designs for the Broadway play M. Butterfly, the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and for films like the Tarsem Singh’s The Cell, The Fall, Mirror Mirror, Mishima and more.
Eiko Ishioka’s far-reaching influence and contribution to the world of visual arts ( in particular costume designs for the cinema ) cannot be overstated, and had it not been for the global pandemic I would very much have wanted to plan a trip to Tokyo to visit her amazing exhibition. This expansive 336 paged catalogue is the next best thing, and gets my highest recommendations.

@Yonghow–I agree! It was those two films where I saw and really paid attention to her work. It’s still hard to believe that she’s no longer with us…:(
