Blanc Et Noir is a huge and sumptuous illustration art book by Japanese manga artist Obata Takeshi of Death Note fame. Despite the title( White and Black ), almost all of the art work found in the book are vivid, full colored illustrations.
Covering Obata’s portfolio from 2001-2006, about 1/3 of the book covers Death Note illustrations, and the remaining spread between Hikari No Go, Yoshitsune-Ki and other miscellaneous work. Many of the illustrations can be folded out to form a double page sized poster. ( below )
I don’t follow Obata’s work very closely, but I like his decorative style of work where the characters are framed by interesting backdrops and each illustration seem to tell a story on its own. His grasp of Contrapposto is excellent, with characters in dynamic, energetic poses.
This is a huge book and might not fit on a regular shelf ! ( 14.9 x 10.6 x 0.8 inches )

He really improved since Hikaru no go. I like to point how he changed his style between Death Note and Bakuman. Death Note’s characters were more realistic and bakuman is the opposite since the story wasn’t so heavy, making it more relaxing and easy to follow. He also likes to change the character’s clothings A LOT.
