Bill Sienkiewicz (pronounced sin-KEV-itch) is an Eisner-winning, Emmy-nominated artist whose work has graced the National Museum of Fine Arts in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; art galleries in Paris, Barcelona, and Tuscany; and advertising campaigns for Nike, MTV, Nissan, the 2006 Winter Olympics, and dozens of Hollywood movies. Sienkiewicz is a classically trained painter whose artworks incorporate abstract and expressionist influences and combine oil painting, acrylics, watercolor, mixed media, collage, and mimeograph.
The first time I came across Bill Sienkiewicz’s art work, I was quickly mesmerized by the painterly, sometimes abstract nature of his work that is seldom seen in comics; certainly not mainstream comics. I always felt his style of work had an affinity to one of my fav painters, the legendary Gustav Klimt ( and by association Egon Schiele ), and I’m happy to discover that is indeed true after reading this book. While most of the art work I’ve seen on twitter are those from his Marvel comics work for Daredevil and Elektra, this book covers much more and I’m thrilled to discover his amazing body of work.
Bill Sienkiewicz: Revolution is the first time the artist’s work and career have been taken out of the context of comic books and evaluated as fine art. Ben Davis, award-winning Senior Writer for Artnet News, considers Sienkiewicz’s process and places him within the context of art and popular culture. Edited by Sal Abbinanti, Sienkiewicz’s representative and colleague for 12 years, Bill Sienkiewicz: Revolution features an introduction by Neil Gaiman, who collaborated with Sienkiewicz on the New York Times bestseller The Sandman, and an interview in which the artist explains his influences and techniques and offers his view on the future of comic book art. The book is covered in luxurious 100% cloth fabric, with two embossed, tipped-in images on the front and back cover.
(image above left and below right ) The strong influence of Austrian Symbolist painter Gustav Klimt’s work can clearly be felt in Bill Sienkiewicz’s work, and I love it !
Revolution is a big and sturdy hardcover volume that covers an expansive collection of Bill Sienkiewicz’s beautiful art work, and gets my high recommendations. I’m going to pick up his Elektra comic next !
