B.P.R.D ( Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense ) is the spin-off comic series from Mike Mignola’s Hellboy, taking place in the same expanded universe as the organization’s “enhanced” agents like Liz Sherman, Abe Sapien and Johann Krauss battle the Ogdru Jahad that first appeared in the Hellboy comics.

This is the 4th hardcover volume from the Hell On Earth arc ( read my review for Vol 2 and Vol 3 ) and collects number 10-11 and 14 of the trade paperback volumes as well as an expanded sketch book section.

Many chapters of this volume are illustrated by some of my favorite BRPD artists from the series including Laurence Campbell and James Harren, with the latter illustrating chapters that delve into the secrets from Howards’ hyperborean past ( dude wielding the forked tongue sword ).

(above and below) The sketches section at the end of every book is something I really enjoy reading, with the artists often sharing design processes when illustrating the trade paperback art covers.

BPRD is really the only US comic series I’m following fairly closely these days, with a great storyline and fantastic art work. I highly recommend fans of Hellboy to check it out ( if you haven’t already ). I fully intend to collect all of these hard cover volumes and they would make for some great binge reading one day.

I also highly recommend the earlier volumes that cover the Plague Of Frogs arc.
