B.P.R.D ( Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense ) is the spin-off comic series from Mike Mignola’s Hellboy, taking place in the same expanded universe as the organization’s “enhanced” agents like Liz Sherman, Abe Sapien and Johann Krauss battle the Ogdru Jahad that first appeared in the Hellboy comics.

This is the 3nd hardcover volume from the Hell On Earth arc ( read my review for Vol 1 and Vol 2 ) and collects number 7 to 9 of the trade paperback volumes as well as an expanded sketch book section.

Many chapters of this volume are illustrated by some of my favorite BRPD artists from the series including Laurence Campbell and James Harren ( Reign Of The Black Flame ), the latter covering the epic battle between Liz Sherman and a resurrected and beef-ed up Black Flame ( image above ).

(above & below) The last chapter covers sketches and ideas from the comic artists and also some cover art by Mike Mignola.

BPRD is really the only US comic series I’m following fairly closely these days, with a great storyline and fantastic art work. I highly recommend fans of Hellboy to check it out ( if you haven’t already ). I fully intend to collect all of these hard cover volumes and they would make for some great binge reading one day.

I also highly recommend the earlier volumes that cover the Plague Of Frogs arc.
