B.P.R.D – Hell On Earth Vol 2 Comic Book Review

B.P.R.D ( Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense ) is the spin-off comic series from Mike Mignola’s Hellboy, taking place in the same expanded universe as the organization’s “enhanced” agents like Liz Sherman, Abe Sapien and Johann Krauss battle the Ogdru Jahad that first appeared in the Hellboy comics.

This is the 2nd hardcover volume from the Hell On Earth arc ( read my review for Vol 1 here ) and collects number 4 to 6 of the trade paperback volumes as well as an expanded sketch book section.

There are two chapters in the book featuring art work by one of my favorite BRPD artists from the series James Harren ( The Long Death, The Abyss Of Time ), as well as cover art by another superb Hellboy/BPRD artist Duncan Fegredo.

(above & below) The sketchbook section of the book is quite phenomenal, and gives me a much better appreciation of the final art work that we see in the actual comics. There’s also a good amount of Mike Mignola sketches and cover art in this section.

BPRD is really the only US comic series I’m following fairly closely these days, with a great storyline and fantastic art work. I highly recommend fans of Hellboy to check it out ( if you haven’t already ). I also highly recommend the earlier volumes that cover the Plague Of Frogs arc.

Got this one. I’ve been loving that DH has been releasing these stories in thick omnibus volumes. And having a good chunk of James Harren’s run and his concept art? Hurts so good! Glad i’m not the only one who has been enjoying the expanded Mignola Hellboy universe. Hands down agree with you that this is the best comics out today!
