Cotoh Tsumi (古塔つみ) is an Aichi born Japanese illustrator who professes to “only drawing girls and lovely people” on the artist’s various social media profiles like Twitter and Instagram. With subject matter focusing on mostly music, apparel and fashion branding, Cotoh Tsumi is also the main artist behind the visual marketing materials for the Japanese musical duo Yoasobi. This is the artist’s first art book, collecting over 500 pieces of illustration.
Trivia – The title of the art book Akaban (赤盤 – meaning “red record”) is also the Japanese nickname given to the Beatle’s 1973 album The Beatles / 1962-1966, perhaps a nod from the artist to the British band’s musical influence on his/her art work.
Looking at the illustrations in the book, the artist switches with ease between the more cartoony, superflat style of drawing to the more realistic rendering of skin-tones and facial features, a testament to the artist’s versatility and skill. Besides the apparent technical excellence, I find Cotoh Tsumi’s drawings to evoke a certain carefree and fashionable vibe that is akin to yet another illustrator, Little Thunder. Definitely an artist whose work I look forward to seeing more of. Recommended.
