Den-noh Coil : Complete Collection Blu-ray

Denno Coil – A Circle of Children (電脳コイル) is a Japanese sci-fi anime television series (2007) depicting a near future where enhanced, highly immersive augmented reality (AR) technology has been integrated into every day life. The series ( produced by Madhouse studios ) is the directorial debut of renowned animator Mitsuo Iso, famed for his impressive animation work on the Asuka VS MPEs fight scene in the End Of Evangelion.

Denno Coil caused quite a stir in the anime industry back in 2007 when it was released because of the exceptional high quality of animation, especially for a TV series. As I was working at Sunrise Animation Studios Ogikubo at that time, and Madhouse studios is located just across the road from us, Denno Coil was a subject of much conversation between me and my colleagues.

Anyhow, I’ve always wanted to acquire the series on video, but as the Japanese edition blu-ray is just way too expensive for me, I had to wait for more than 10 years after the series’ release to finally get it when this US edition became available; check out some pictures of the jewel case and contents –

Released by Maiden Japan ( who also gave us the excellent Patlabor Ultimate Blu-ray Boxset ), the 26 episodes are spread across 3 blu-ray discs. I’m not knowledgeable enough to comment on the audio quality of the release, but the video quality is clean and crisp; with the high fidelity that one would expect from a good quality HD master.

There’s not much in the way of supplementary materials except some trailers and the clean opening and ending sequences, but I’m just glad that I can finally have the fantastic series on video at an affordable price. Recommended.

While we’re talking about Denno Coil, definitely check out these 2 fantastic art books for the series; Denno Coil – A Circle Of Children Archives and The Denno Coil Project Art Book.

Oh- das was a good one! I had to get it for myself too when it came out in the US. Great series!

This is one of my favorite hidden gem anime (hidden for me at least). I knew nothing at all about this series before I bought the original Maiden Japan release (4 blu ray discs over two separate volumes) in … 2016 it looks like. It now has a prized place in my blu ray collection.

I was absolutely stunned by the story, the art, the music, everything. I really think this is a must see for anyone interested in smart stories that grapple a bit with our use of information technologies — or really, if you’re just interested in very well rendered stories.

It’s pretty weird that you mention this series now because literally just last week I finally bought the CD release of the full version of Prism, sung by Ayako Ikeda. It’s a beautiful song so if you find that you like the short anime opening version from this show, you might try to track this CD down. The full version of Sora no Kakera, the ending theme of the anime, is also included on that CD (it’s very very nice as well).

Ralf – Love it, been waiting for a good price to pick this up.

Chris – For me one of the highlights of the film is the amazing character animation, which is really high quality for a TV series ! I love both the opening and ending theme songs as well, I might have to hunt down the CDs like you did !
