Lawrence Alma-Tadema (8 January 1836 – 25 June 1912) was a Dutch-born British painter, one of the finest and most distinctive of the Victorian painters. Although not an official member of the Brotherhood, Tadema was a close contemporary of the Pre-Raphaelites, one of my favourite group of painters that include the ranks of JW Waterhouse and John Everett Millais.
I’ve always enjoyed the quality of Phaidon art books, and this volume contains a fantastic collection of the artist’s works.
(above) Alma-Tadema was renowned for his superb renderings of masonry, in particular white marble. His work has been a source of visual inspiration for many films, including Ridley Scott’s Gladiator.
Quite a number of larger paintings in the book had to be spread across the pages, which unfortunately diminishes the viewing pleasure. That said the book still contains a very comprehensive collection of the artist’s works, superbly reproduced. Highly recommended.
