I picked up this copy of Kari-gurashi ( Arrietty ) storyboard book on my recent trip to Tokyo. Running 464 pages, this volume covers the complete production storyboards and were drawn by director of the film Hiromasa Yonebayashi himself. Earlier Ghibli storyboard books like My Neighbour Totoro, Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke were drawn by Miyazaki-san, who was the director for all three films.
The boards are highly detailed, with color pencil rendering for an added sense of dimension and is great for reference/study of the film’s flow.
While you won’t find as many comical doodles on the side of the boards like those found in Princess Mononoke, there are still plenty of interesting captions and sketches to help document the action of the boards. ( knowing how to read Japanese will further enhance your understanding )
While I personally prefer the drawing style of Miyazaki-san, these boards are no less inferior in quality at and would serve as a great companion to The Art of Arrietty book. ( read review here. )
