I found Rahxephon super confusing and made me think of Evangelion, some people can tell those series are kind of similar in several aspects.

I’ve not seen this yet, but I’m always disappointed when I see the films or series Yamada has worked on. I love his work, and I would honestly rather see a comic rather than an animation or live action, as his designs are wonderful, but I am just not a fan of the work he is contracted for. I guess my point is that he does his job beautifully, but the result beyond his participation is rarely interesting to me.

Hmmm, I would be more willing to attribute it to the lack of imagination in the anime and film market in Japan. While there is a wealth of talent in terms of design, and animation, bigger titles these days are pretty devoid of originality that could even match the visual designs of their work. Writers or production committees seem to gravitate too much to what will sell (which is understandable due to the cost of producing animation) rather than push the envelope in terms of what is possible in animation. Honestly, they are working with the most malleable film form ever, and they would rather make another story about a highschool student who goes back in time to fall in love or fight the same stupid monster version of Nobunaga or some other such historical figure. I’m not saying I don’t like some of these things, but modern mainstream filmmaking and animation in Japan could use a lot of work. Look at the state of videogames in Japan as well; it’s about what studios know will sell rather than pushing the envelope, so they wait for western studios to make something interesting, then remodel their work off of what is selling most. Kojima may be the rare exception right now.
