Ping Pong Complete Artworks is the official art book for the highly acclaimed anime series directed by Masaaki Yuasa, based on the original manga Ping Pong by Tekkon Kinkreet creator Taiyo Matsumoto.
The book contains a delightful collection of materials used during the production of the series, including color scripts, background art work, character sheets, genga ( key animation drawings ) and more.
(above & below) Color scripts not only define the lighting and color palette used in a film but also help to establish the overall mood, style and direction.
Really loving the background art pieces used in Ping Pong – the illustrations are simple and the colors used soft and subdued, like a faint but fond memory in your mind. The landscape format of the art book allows the art work to fill up the entire page and makes for great viewing.
(above & below) Detailed character sheets serve as valuable reference materials for the animators working on the series.
If you’ve heard good things about this anime but are hesitant to watch it because pingpong really isn’t your thing, I urge you to give it a chance – the subject matter is just a transient medium by which the filmmakers employ to tell their story, and the series is immersed in rich character development and interesting, sometimes even profound musings on the philosophy of life. Anime like this don’t come by all the time.
A fantastic collection of beautiful art work from a superb anime series. This one gets my highest recommendations.

Wow, I really like the lineart of Ping Pong – it is all about movement and that is what animation aims.
Do they sell it overseas? On Amazon JP it is only shipped to Japan.

Instantly one of my favorite anime series! Also the artbook looks well worth the money (some artbooks are ruined because of too much negative space and odd picture placement). Keep up the good work yonghow 🙂 your work on this website is very much appreciated.

Christopher – Thank you for the kind words. I’m glad you enjoy the posts. :]
Petit Orenji – Haha, I know what you mean. But I guess this is just Masaaki Yuasa’s style of animation. 😛

I’m a fan of the 90s/early 2000s era of anime, and Ping Pong is one of the few recent shows that have stacked up to that heyday, with its realism, maturity, and lack of easy otaku tropes.
