“Kikan S” is a popular Japanese illustration magazine released quarterly ( Mar/Jun/Sep/Dec ), and contains a superb collection of the latest art work from the top illustrators and comic artists working in Japan.
Browsing a copy is a great way to be introduced to new and upcoming artists, as well as staying in touch with the latest news and development in the Japanese comics/animation industry. Every issue comes with a pull out poster illustrated by Range Murata. ( above )
The theme for this issue (no. 47 – June 2014) is “Angels & Demons”. (above) Animator/concept artist/character designer Tatsuyuki Tanaka’s piece for the magazine. I love his art work and am still disappointed that his 2nd art book Boiled Head ( Cannabis Works was his first ) was never released.
(above & below) A feature on the animation in Kill La Kill.
(above left) Illustration by manga artist/illustrator Hiroyuki Asada ( Tegami Bachi ). Below – Illustration by Yoko Tanji, one of my favourites as well. You can follow her on twitter.
(above) Illustration by Taiwanese artist Pinfan/Chen Sufen, another regular contributor for this magazine. Check out their art book here.
(above) Angel sculptures. I’ve always held a fascination for these sculptures and find them incredibly graceful and beautiful. I spent quite a bit of time photographing them I was in Italy ( Cimitero Monumentale ) and Paris ( Montparnasse Cemetery ).
