Hiromasa Yonebayashi is a Japanese animator and director from Studio Ghibli, having directed The Secret World of Arrietty and the upcoming film When Marnie Was There.
This art book is a collection of his concept sketches, drawings and illustrations he has created for more recent Studio Ghibli films like When Marnie Was There, Ponyo, Arrietty and Kaze Tachinu ( When The Wind Rises ).
(above & below right ) Character design illustrations for When Marnie Was There.
(below left) Layout board drawings for Ponyo. This particular piece was used as one of the promotional images for the amazing Ghibli Layout Design Exhibition, first held in Tokyo in 2008.
A beautiful collection of art work from one of Ghibli’s new wave of young directors. With Miyazaki-san retired ( for now 😛 ), it will be up to new talent like Hiromasa Yonebayashi to carry on the amazing work that the studio has done so far.

Five image, from the top…could those research sketches could be more expresiive ? I mean, if the such called “minimalism” as Bauhaus concept,or “less is more” is applied to character design, this is it. I think i could stare at them for hours. I think that’s one of the most powerful thingss of Ghibli.

The animators in Japan have mastered the skill of creating the most expressive faces with the least amount of strokes, I think. :]
