The Making of Gorillaz: The Mountain, The Moon Cave & The Sad God - Director's Cut | THE LINE

If you are an ardent fan of Gorillaz music or the artist Jamie Hewlett, you would most likely have already watched the latest animated short film for their album ‘The Mountain‘ ( I’ve included the video below in case you haven’t ), released back in February this year.

Just recently, ‘The Line‘, which is the animation company behind the animated short released a making of video for the film, and it is just as delightful as the short itself. Check it out below-

For me, it is so very inspiring as well as creatively nourishing to see the involved process behind the creation of the animation, background art, props, all lovingly crafted by talented humans with a clear passion for their art and profession. Watching the video, it does make me miss the more carefree process of experimentation and exploration of artistic techniques during my student days, although I thoroughly appreciate the opportunities to work on major animation & film projects for a living.

I do have a question for Gorillaz fans, are these animated shorts ever released on physical media ? I would very much like to get my hands on a copy for future enjoyment and study if so.

Oh man, I would absolutely buy a Gorillaz blu ray too!

I’m glad the behind the scenes video finally was released to the broader public. There were rumours that the entire video was hand painted with physical cels, with that one photo travelling all over the internet. Turns out it was just the one cel they made for a reference. (of course, an entirely cel animated short released in this day and age would be cool) So I’m glad I could finally check it out for myself.

Despite not being cel animation, I think it’s one of the best Gorillaz videos.

Coffee – Yep, I too was curious if the entire production was actually done with cels until this documentary surfaced. Still cool they used it for reference though !
