Baba Yaga is a VR animated short film by nine-time Emmy®-winning Baobab Studios. Directed by Eric Darnell ( Antz, Madagascar franchise ) and Mathias Chelebourg, the story is based on the fairy tale of the supernatural being Baba Yaga from Slavic folklore, and boasts a most impressive voice-cast featuring actors like Kate Winslet, Glenn Close, Daisy Ridley and Jennifer Hudson.
This beautiful hardcover art book for the film showcases more than 150 pages of concept artwork, storyboards and character designs, offering a fascinating behind the scenes look and immersive insight into the creation of this visually stunning short. Some of the biggest highlights for me are the elaborate set and environment designs, the rich and colorful graphic shapes accentuated by skillfully applied lightning and shadow-play; the included environment breakdowns are a plus and really gives the reader an illuminating peek into how they were created.
I do not own any Oculus VR headsets, so I’ve not been lucky enough to watch the film as yet ( available on Oculus Quest ), but based on the most delightful concept art work featured in this book, the viewing experience must be pretty spectacular. Whether you’ve seen the film or not, the captivating content of this art book holds up on it’s own, and would make for a great companion to the film. Recommended.
I want to thank Julian Gray, the marketing director at Baobab Studios for graciously sending me a copy of this book for review.
