More of a retrospective than an actual art book, The Anime Works of Satoshi Kon examines and discusses the films of the late director, with interviews and excerpts from various anime directors, voice actors, etc.
(above) Sneak images from Satoshi Kon’s yet to be released Dream Machine. I’m not bowled over by the design of the robots but we’ll have to see them in the context of the film, whenever it’s ready for release.
(Below) A small collection of character design sheets from the director’s films. I wish they had published individual art books for all of his films, like this excellent one for Millenium Actress. ( Read the book review here. )
“The Anime Works of Satoshi Kon″ Art book details :
– Dimensions – 10.1 x 7.2 x 0.5 inches
– Softcover, 88 pages
– Full color / b & w, Japanese language

Amazing stuff. I still can’t believe he is gone. 🙁
Thanks for sharing!

I still haven’t watched any Kon Satoshi (but all his films are on my to-watch list for this year).
I’m not too captivating by the designs of the robots in the Dream Machine either, but still hoping that the film will be finished one day and released – even if it won’ the quite the same with Kon only having done part of the work.

it’s very cool that this book exists, but honestly i don’t know if i feel like owning this one. i love him and all his work, but i am still hanging on for an affordable version of the artbook that came out last year at his retrospective. there was a book that came out in English about a year or so ago, right before he died, called Satoshi Kon: The Illusionist, that has less in the way of visuals, but does a good job critiquing his work. i feel like this was almost a missed opportunity for something greater, though i love him and his work to death.

Robert – I feel the same. Can’t help but think of the many great films he could have made if he was still with us.
alua – I think once you’ve seen any one of his films you’ve be tempted to catch all of them !
Zack – I’m really hoping that release an art book version of his retrospective as well. I won’t imagine it’ll be cheap, but I’ll still be happy to get it.

i’d even pay Kaba 2 prices for it, i just know that $300 version was impossible to get, and still waaaaay too much.

Zack – Thanks for pointing me to Satoshi Kon: The Illusionist. I didn’t know about it and bought it right away.
