So I finally saved up enough money to purchase 4 of the AKIRA and Ghost In The Shell background art posters from Riekeles Gallery that I talked about back in the summer of 2022.
Part of the motivation that drove me to finally pull the trigger on these posters was because I noticed a few of them are running low on stock in the online store; it is entirely possible that there would be re-prints when they are sold-out, which would make it a moot point but regardless it was a good excuse I gave myself to grab them. Here are some pictures –
At 65 EU ( about $71 USD ) a pop, these posters aren’t cheap, but what you get is quality. The print is crisp, and the colors are vibrant, but not overly saturated, preserving the original look of the background art piece as they are meant to be seen. I also love how the thickness and/or quality of the paper prevents it from rolling up once you flatten it out, although I’m not sure if this was an intentionally built-in feature. Regardless, it’s great.
(image below) A slightly zoomed-in image of the above poster just to look at all the spectacular detail.
There’s quite a few more pieces available on the store that I wish I had the money to pick up, but maybe when I’ve saved up enough and they are (hopefully) still in stock. There are also some new posters from Ghibli’s Kiki’s Delivery Service that I’ll write a separate post on.
Head on down to Riekeles Gallery for more details.
I would also recommend the art book Anime Architecture ( read my review here ) ( also published by Riekeles Gallery ), which showcases many more posters from some other amazing anime films.

Riekeles Gallery really does put out some beautiful background posters. I’m really tempted to buy some of the Kiki’s Delivery Service backgrounds.

I’ve seen the exhibition held in Berlin and, as expected, the colors of the real backgrounds are much more vibrant than what you see in the posters. The solegraph prints are pretty true to the originals when it come sto the color and render the brush strokes / convey the technique used to paint these much better than these posters. But yeah, they are 10-20x more expensive.. 🙂 Aaand mostly sold out which is pretty crazy.
