Anime Town, Kami-Igusa Tokyo

Some pictures of Kami-Igusa taken during my recent time in Tokyo. I was on my way to the excellent Kon Satoshi Retrospective exhibition ( more details here ) held at the Sugunami Animation Museum.

Kami-Igusa is a sleepy little train station located along the Seibu-Shinjuku line, and the area is often referred to as “Anime Town” because of the many animation studios ( notably Sunrise satellite studios ) located around the vicinity.

(below) A prominent Gundam statue greets commuters just outside the station entrance/exit.

The pleasant walk to the museum takes one through the quiet neighbourhood of Suginami.

(above) The very austere looking Suginami Animation Museum. See this older post on some of the permanent exhibits found inside.

Photography wasn’t allowed inside the Kon Satoshi Retrospective exhibition, and while it was quite small in scale some highlights include never seen before colored illustrations of Kaikisen, really beautiful, and some of Kon Satoshi’s student work which honestly bests even some professional work we see these days.

The exhibition runs till the 25th of January, so you have about 2 more weeks to catch it. Admission is free – more details here.
