Vogue : Fantasy & Fashion Photography Book Review

Vogue : Fantasy & Fashion is a gigantic tome of a pictorial, a dream book of empowering and fantastical fashion narratives — from Brothers Grimm to futuristic scenarios—told in Vogue’s inimitable style.

Lavishly illustrated, this volume celebrates Vogue magazine’s strong and deeply rooted tradition of storytelling through magical, narrative portfolios. Fashion’s greatest power is its ability to make people dream; to create new worlds. Whether falling down a rabbit hole, conquering new, digital frontiers, or exploring the limits of surrealism, the heroines who feature in photographs by great talents like Annie Leibovitz, Steven Meisel, Irving Penn, and Steven Klein are writing their own tales, defining their own destinies.

Featuring well-known images as well as unexpected gems from the archive, Vogue: Fantasy & Fashion documents fashion at its most magical and affirms its transformative power.

(above & below) A series titled “Dressing Like The Dickens”, shot by one of my favorite fashion photographers Tim Walker; I particularly like his sense of art direction. Definitely check out his photography book Tim Walker Pictures.

(above & below) While the book has a primary focus on fantasy themes, the sci-fi entries are strong in their game as well.

During the earlier days of my creative career, I interned as a fashion photographer’s assistant, and seriously considered it as my future profession. While that dream never happened, I still love to live vicariously through beautiful fashion photography books like this one, which not only fuels my creative imagination but serves as sweet eye candy as well. Recommended.

Technical note – The sheer size of this giant hardcover volume ( you can see how I had a challenging time handling the book in my flip-through video above. ) translates into the most stunning reproductions of the photographs; my small preview pictures in this post do little justice to the high visual fidelity of the prints, and you must really see the book in person to experience it.
