Renowned for his iconic art work of Ultraman/Kaiju, Gundam and Godzilla, Japanese artist Yuji Kaida‘s new art book Mechanism Trajectory (メカニズムの軌跡) showcases a wide gamut of mecha illustrations by the artist painted since the early days of his career starting from Aura Battler Dunbine (聖戦士ダンバイン /1983 ), with over 160 pieces of fantastic full colored art work, including mecha from familiar anime and toy franchises like Evangelion, Mobile Police Patlabor, Macross, Zoids, Mazinger Z and more.

Besides the artist’s dramatic and impactful compositions, one of the visual highlights of Yuji Kaida’s work is his skilled and highly realistic rendering; I feel as though I could almost reach into his illustrations and feel the brushed metal surfaces of his painted mecha. By the way, ff you’re wondering why Gundam illustrations are noticeable missing from this book, that’s because they are collected in their own book ( read my review here ).

(above & below) Frequent readers of my blog will know I am a really big Patlabor fan; and I was pleasantly surprised to find more than my anticipated pieces of Patlabor illustrations included in this book, most of which I am new to ! Also, I’ve always suspected that Yuji Kaida is the artist behind the illustrations in the excellent but out of print The Labor Industry; but I don’t have my copy of the book currently to verify this.

This book will make an excellent companion to the Gundam and Godzilla art books by Yuji Kaida. The art work showcased are splendid, especially if you are a mecha fan. Highly recommended.
