Otomo Katsuhiro's Short Peace Program Book Review 映画パンフレット 大友克洋、森田修平、安藤裕章、カトキハジメ

Otomo Katsuhiro’s much awaited animated film “Short Peace” started its domestic run on the 20th of July, and feedback from my friends who have seen it have been positive so far.

As with most Japanese theatrical releases, a Program Book (see this post on Japanese Program/Press books) is also released, basically a small booklet that contains the film’s synopsis and background, production photos, cast and crew information, etc. Because the book is (usually) only available for sale in cinemas during the film’s run, the popular ones become collectors items.

(above) The program book for Short Peace come housed in a slipcase and consists of 2 items, 1) the program book itself and 2) A double-sided foldout image board. (more pictures further down)

(above) The concept art and character designs shown in the book are fairly small and details are hard to make out – for that you need the character design sheets book. I’ll review the book at a later date. (below) Designs for the foldout image board.

As I mentioned earlier program books are usually sold only in cinemas, but Amazon Japan is selling this item, at least during the time of writing.

Please note that the original price for the book is 1500 yen, but Amazon is selling it for 3200 yen. If you can navigate a Japanese site ( and live in Japan too ) you can get the book at the original price here. ( it doesn’t ship outside Japan )

i can’t tell if there is much Otomo art in this book or just designs from the rest of the crew. any insight into this, Vong? also, it seems like Amazon.jp won’t ship this out of Japan either, so i probably won’t see this outside of eBay or something.

Otomo-san created artwork only for his segment (the period piece). The artwork from Farewell To Weapons resemble his style but is actually done by Tatsuyuki Tanaka.

In any case, the reproductions are too small, this other book (http://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B00E2S2LY4/?tag=jpboxsets-22) is the one to get, but unfortunately as you mentioned it doesn’t seem to ship outside Japan too.

I’ll post a review of it soon.
