Japanese VFX studios have in recent times been churning out some very interesting and fantastic work; hot on the heels of the Japanese Netflix series Alice In Borderland ( 今際の国のアリス ), where Digital Frontier created a barren Shibuya Crossing, we now have the iconic red light district of Kabukicho in Shinjuku been overrun by ravaging zombies in the Netflix film Zom 100 Bucket List Of The Dead, adapted from the original manga by Haro Aso/Kotaro Takata. Check out the making of video below.
Just like the bustling Shibuya Crossing in Tokyo, the Kabukicho area of Shinjuku is extremely busy with human traffic and is nigh impossible to shut down for filming, so re-creating it on a separate location with CG environment extensions is certainly the way to go. The scale isn’t quite as big as the one for the crossing in Alice In Borderland, but the results are still pretty realistic and successful.
The VFX behind the film is done by several studios including Tokyo based Japanese studio Megalis and South Korean studio 012vxr. I was pleasantly surprised to see quite few a former colleagues from ILM Singapore taking on leadership roles at both these studios for this project, namely Jeff Dillinger and Kibum Kim, both VFX supervisors.
Japan has been upping their #vfx game in these recent Netflix series, first the impressive barren Shibuya crossing in #AliceInBorderland, and now #Zom100.
The Kabukicho area of Shinjuku is an iconic spot in Tokyo, and the virtual re-creation is stunningly spot on.#??100 https://t.co/Whj0218aoO— blauereiter (@blauereiter) August 18, 2023
Now I wonder if Megalis is hiring…
