I need a higher ceiling.

My stash of dvds, about 300, procured slowly over my 4 years of stay here in Japan. I think I have another 300+ back in Singapore.

I guesstimate (if I squeeze) there might be estate for maybe 5-10 more dvds before I hit the roof. Its a pain in the ass sometimes trying to locate a film I want to see. The rest of my (unsightly) room is choked up with books stacked precariously high, probably not a wise idea in such an earthquake prone city but there really isn’t anywhere else to go but up. I hope I can move to a bigger dwelling soon.

Collecting dvds is not my hobby; I care not for pretty shelves to display the glossy covers nor admire and congratulate myself on the numbers I have accumulated. In the strictest sense, its a form of life long learning; a creative investment – because housed within each dvd is a piece of cinematic art which can be watched, rewatched, studied, and have served as inspiration for many a filmmaker. Years of toil by the director, DOP, gaffers, set designers, art directors, carpenters, CG artists, costume designers, their collective fruit of labor all neatly distilled into a disc that can be readily appreciated at the touch of a play button, I say its one heck of a bargain.

Pompous talk aside, I just love watching movies. I think I’ll start with my recently acquired Bladerunner Final cut tonight, thanks to Ronnie for the heads up.

What dvds have you folks bought recently ?

earthquake? the dvd column will support your roof.

Vong, you have a problem. A very enviable problem but a problem nontheless. I am sure there are people who are willing to help you address the issue and provide some much needed space and relief should you decide to reach out to them. 🙂

too cool

CMWilly

ill make sure i notify the police to search for your body underneath the “mountain of dvds” if theres every a big earthquake in tokyo! (^_^);

Roy

I’m sure you can probably do without half of those dvds. I weed out my DVD collection constantly and sell the ones I no longer want. I’m planning to get rid of all of my standard def ones so I can concentrate on blu-ray. Disc Union in Shinjuku buys Region 1 if you decide you want to part with some of them.

leon

Man, where do you find the time to watch everything?

Ivy

wow that’s a crazy amount of dvds!! maybe you should another shelf and then alphabetize it! (that’s what i do with my mountainous cd collection. i arrange it into two shelves: asian and western, then alphabetize.)

Sylon Beta

I think that you should take some time out to sort your DVD’s into two piles, one that you intend to watch and one that you don’t, and store those that you don’t intend to watch in cardboard boxes or some other storage container. It helps to cut down on the visual clutter.

Just my two cent’s worth. Hope it helps.

double

I spot 2 copies of Freedom 1!

jackson – Money well spent. :p

todd – Great ! Be sure to remember your advice. :]

CMWilly – Cool, at least they know where to dig now ! :p

Roy – Thanks for the info ! I reckon you’re talking about the one near to Tsutaya and Kinokuniya ? I hope they’ll offer me more than bookoff though.

BTW I watched 3:10 to Yuma as you recommended – other than Gretchen Mol having too little screen time, I think I liked it quite a bit. :]

leon – I used to have a lot more time as a film student, so I was watching a lot of movies. These days I have to be selective.

Ivy, Sylon Beta – I’m going to store all the discs in a huge cd wallet and keep the jewel boxes I think, its what’s taking up all the space. But thanks for the advice ! :]

double – Sharp eyes ! One of them is the Freedom Gold Edition that I received from Sunrise a while back.

Shigues

woowwww…. so jealous… 🙂

Kasumi

I guess you can call these stacks of DVDs your ‘textbooks.’
xD

Nicola
