Expanding Universe – Photographs From The Hubble Space Telescope is a sumptuous pictorial of astonishing photographs taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. On the 25th anniversary of its launch into low-earth orbit, TASCHEN celebrates its most breathtaking deep space images both as scientific feats and as photographic masterpieces.
The book is light on text ( in 3 languages, English, French and German ), with most of the pages dedicated to stunning images of distant galaxies and celestial bodies. The paper quality used is very good, with the glossy pages used mostly for photographs and a nicely textured, matte paper for pages with text. This is similar to the treatment for some of Taschen’s other high quality art books like Velázquez and Hieronymus Bosch.
In the book’s introductory statement, it is revealed that NASA is now working on Hubble’s sucessor, the James Webb Space Telescope. It will be the most powerful space telescope ever build, with capabilities far exceeding that of Hubble, allowing us to see the most distant objects in the universe. I cannot wait.
These photographs are absolutely awe-inspiring and one cannot help but ponder upon the infinite wonders of our Universe while flipping through this beautifully printed book. My highest recommendations.
