Famed anime director Otomo Katsuhiro (Akira) has flexed his considerable artistic muscles to help design a giant wall mural ( a bar relief sculpture, to be exact ) for display at the Sendai Airport, based on one of his illustrations. ( click on image below for a bigger version )
The illustration is actually based on an original piece which can be found in his art book Kaba volume 2 ( see image below ); it is possible the Japanese deities framing the center character were added later on specifically for this project.

The work is expected to be completed/go on display around March 2015, so if you’re visiting Sendai keep an eye out for this one.

That was one of my favorite Kaba 2 pieces, and it looks like it will be really something when it’s finished. I love seeing Otomo’s work rendered in three dimensions; this reminds me of the anthropomorphic animal puppets he designed for the commercial featured in Kaba 1.
