Mythology – The DC Comics Art of Alex Ross is a huge ( 11.8 x 8.8 x 0.9 inches, 320 pages ) and lavish volume housing an impressive collection of the artist’s best illustration work. The book documents the evolution of his changing style, right from his childhood sketches to the super realistic renderings we’ve come to love, and offers a rare glimpse of Alex Ross’s creative process.
(above) Alex Ross shares with the reader some of his influences, including Norman Rockwell and Andrew Loomis. ( below left )
(above) Ross pays tribute to Mad Magazine for one of their covers, and also painted a tie-in comic for the Justice League animated series. (below) Uncle Sam is one of his first foray outside the Superhero genre/realm.
(above and below) The many pencil sketches spread throughout the book is a great chance to study the artist’s amazing draftsmanship.
Highly recommended. Fans of Alex Ross’s comics/artwork should definitely consider picking this up.

i’ve mentioned before how i am not a fan of his comic work, but his full page illustrations are really where he shines. when he can focus on a single theme on which the viewer can focus, he is remarkable.
also, i always thought he made Batman look like a goober. he just looks like an overly bulky guy who could barely move around in a spandex suit. there is no mystery or shadow to his form.

Zack – Haha, I’ve never paid special attention to his illustrations of Batman but now that you mentioned it I think you might be right.
