How Moebius Inspired Me | Katsuya Terada | Human Made

If you are a software company specializing in digital painting tools and had to pick an artist to endorse your product, who better to do it than the king of Rakugaki ( doodling/sketching ), the famed Katsuya Terada (寺田克也) ?

This short 3 minute video is basically an advertisement for the digital painting software Procreate, but the endorsement is worded gently and more importantly, it gives us a rare glimpse of the artist’s creative workspace and also allows Terada to share with us his deep reverence to the late and most certainly legendary comic artist Jean Giraud / Moebius. Check it out below –

If you’re a fan of both Terada as well as Moebius, you’ll likely agree that the superbly expressive crosshatching technique and style of Moebius is what Terada has inherited and also developed into a distinctive look of his own. Moebius’ wide influence on notable Japanese artists is substantial, including of course Katsuhiro Otomo, Hayao Miyazaki and Yukito Kishiro ( Battle Angel Alita ). I am sure there are many others I am not aware of.
