Wes Anderson Collection : The Grand Budapest Hotel is an in-depth and delightful look into the making of the film, with a plethora of production photos, sketches and storyboards, as well as interviews with some of the key creative personnel like lead actor Ralph Fiennes, costumer designer Milena Canonero, cinematographer Robert Yeoman and more.
The book is a very fitting companion to The Wes Anderson Collection ( read review here ), also by Matt Zoller Seitz.
(above) The pastel pink Mendl’s pastry box is a recurring visual element in the film. It purpose is more than just a pretty prop but a requisite element needed to advance an important plot point.
(above & below) The final chapter of the book talks about the challenges of shooting in the 4:3 format, and how the filmmakers devised various methods of framing and composition in order to achieve aesthetically pleasing shots.
Just like the author’s previous book The Wes Anderson Collection, The Grand Budapest Hotel is not only a great treat for fans of Wes Anderson’s films but also an excellent resource for the craft of film-making ( sound, production design, cinematography, costume design, the works). My highest recommendations.
