The Electric State | Official Teaser | Netflix

Netflix has just released the first teaser for the upcoming dystopian sci-fi film The Electric State directed by The Russo Brothers ( Captain America : Winter Soldier / Avengers : Endgame ). The film is based on a 2018 illustrated novel of the same name by Simon Stålenhag. Check out the trailer below –

This is actually not the first illustrated novel by Simon Stålenhag that has been bought to live on screen, back in 2020 Amazon Studios already adapted the artist’s Tales From The Loop into a series, and I rather enjoyed it.

I’m a big fan of Simon Stålenhag’s art and have reviewed all his past art books – Tales From The Loop / Things From The Flood / The Electric State / Labyrinth, and so I’m pretty excited for this latest adaptation as well. There’s been a fair bit of chatter online with folks criticizing the trailer as been unfaithful to the original material; personally I rather not make any kind of judgement as such until only after I’ve seen the actual film. And even if the film does turn out to be less than good, the silver lining for all book to screen adaptations is that they will always generate more interest in the original material, which is always great for the artist/creator.

If you are new to Simon Stålenhag’s works, I very highly recommend checking out all of them – Tales From The Loop / Things From The Flood / The Electric State / Labyrinth.

The Electric State will be released in March 2024.

DISTRAKT

Solid!

I hope Netflix does a better job than Amazon did with the “Tales from the Loop” TV series.
I died of boredom and I’m sure it was a worldwide flop…
Stalenhag as a painter is decidedly visionary and special. Let’s hope so…on Netflix!

Like you, I don’t want to be too quick to judge this before it’s even been released.
However, I am a little apprehensive.

Stålenhag’s paintings depict a creepy stillness, the aftermath of a societal collapse from detachment and neglect.
This looks like a silly action comedy.

Actually, it seems to have a similar vibe to 2020’s “Love and Monsters” — which I enjoyed, but for entirely different reasons. I don’t think that would be the right tone for this project.
We shall see…
Regardless, I agree with you. It’s nice to see Stålenhag getting a little bit of notoriety.

DISTRAKT – No doubt !

Cristiano – Fingers crossed indeed !

Scott – I agree with what you said about it looking like a light hearted comedy, I have a bad feeling it might be studio execs intefering with the creative direction in the fear that Stålenhag’s original work might be too dark for casual viewers. Just my 2 cents, I guess we’ll see !
