The Art of Jinroh - Behind The Screen Art Book

I love Hiroyuki Okiura’s anime film Jinroh ( The Wolf Brigade ) to bits – for me it’s one of those pictures you watch and never forget. ( and also partly because of Hajime Mizoguchi’s haunting soundtrack. ) Why don’t they make anime films like this anymore ?

Behind The Screen is one of two “Art of” books for Jinroh, the other one been Jinroh Maniaxx. There are some overlapping material in the books, but both are worth getting in my opinion. I’ll post a review of that some other time.

(above) Plenty of character sheets and concept art in the book, I think the printing could have been a little better though, as some of the finer pencil sketches are harder to make out. ( below) Some sample pages from the storyboards; I believe the dvd boxset of the film comes with the full storyboard book.

Some years back I was lucky enough to get an autograph on the boxset while working in Sunrise from Abe-san, who worked on color design of the film.

(above) Reproductions of layout boards from the film, and (below) key drawings. I think the only section missing from the book is the background art, some of them can be found in Ogura Hiromasa’s “Light And Darkness” background art book. I have a copy of the book and hope to post a review soon.

Zack – Pity, A Letter To Momo was screening in cinemas during my time in Tokyo but I couldn’t find time to watch it.

I just got the art book though – will post review soon. :]

I have the book. The biggest focus on this book is preproduction, animation, and layouts. It would be nice if they added background arts, but animation itself is too prominent to ignore. I think grey scale printing might affect line quality of drawings than black & white prints. It’s a waste to print things in B& W on glossy paper. Key animation drawings done in color pencils anyway, so why not use some color, right?
