Sousakuzine is a special publication by the Japanese magazine “Illustration” ( see review of issue 197 here ) and features interviews with prominent artists working in the Japanese illustration/animation scene today. Read the review for Vol 1 here.

This issue ( vol. 2 ) showcases character sculptor Katagiri Hiroshi, illustrator/manga artist Morohoshi Daijiro and and Kaiju illustrator Kaida Yuji.

(above & below) Illustrations by veteran manga artist Morohiroshi Daijiro. Most of his major works were done before my time in the early 1970s so I’m not particularly familiar with them, although he has been cited to be of influence to anime directors like Osamu Tezuka (Astroboy), Miyazaki Hayao and Hideaki Anno.

(above & below) Illustrations by Kaida Yuji, who specializes in Kaiju art work. He has a sizeable repertoire of Kaiju illustration art books on Amazon Japan, including this new one for Godzilla.

( above right ) Kaida Yuji’s work area. I’m always fascinated by the artist’s work space because it is always inspiring to look at and often you can spot items of interest that give hints to the artist’s creative influences. Check out Otomo Katsuhiro’s and Inoue Takehiko’s work areas.

(below) Katagiri Hiroshi, a veteran special effects makeup artist/creature designer/sculptor who many credits include work he did at Stan Winston studios and countless other films. Gehenna is his Kickstarter project.

A great round up on some of the best talents in the Japanese animation/illustration scene today. Periodicals like this are seldom reprinted so get your copy before it is sold out.
