Some pictures from the Criterion blu-ray release of “Paris, Texas”, directed by Wim Wenders. I still remember how deeply affecting the movie was, watching it for the first time back in film school many years ago. I got very little done for the rest of that day because the beautiful but melancholic visuals from the film kept playing back in my head.
Till date Paris, Texas remains my favourite Wim Wenders film, more so than his other famous work “Wings Of Desire” ( of which Meg Ryan’s “City Of Angels” is based on).
I only recently found out that the film was written by Sam Shepard, a prolific supporting actor that have appeared in many films ( Black Hawk Down, Killing Them Softly, Mud, just to name a few ). He must one of those very talented artists who can write and act equally well, like Clark Gregg and Brit Marling.
(above & below) The cinematography of the stark and empty Texan landscape brings to mind the art work of American painter Edward Hopper.
If you’re new to Wim Wender’s films, this is a great one to start with. For those who love the film, the Criterion blu-ray offers a significant upgrade in image quality ( I have the dvd as well ), a host of great supplementary materials and comes very highly recommended.

hi Yonghow, i got around to watching it over the weekend and similar to your sentiments, this movie was deeply affecting. in fact i would say it’s already one of my favorite films ever. i got emotional at various times throughout the movie, and for different reasons. the direction, writing, cinematography, acting and soundtrack were all great. it’s beautiful sublime filmmaking. one of those films that i find inspiring, makes me fall in love with filmmaking.
and like you said, i didn’t get a lot done after watching it. i kept rewatching it when i should’ve been working. regardless i just wanna say thanks for bringing up this gem of a film.
