Having recently acquired rights to the 4K restoration of Tarsem Singh’s The Fall (2006), featuring some truly spectacular costume designs by the late Eiko Ishioka (石岡 瑛子 1938-2012), film distributor MUBI has put together this short but nonetheless most impressive portfolio clip of the costume designer’s considerable contributions to film. Check it out below –
I’m a really big fan of Eiko Ishioka’s work, especially her costume designs for Francis Ford Coppola 1992 film Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
I highly recommend checking out Eiko Ishioka : Blood, Sweat, And Tears – A Life Of Design, the the official catalogue for the retrospective exhibition held at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo from Nov 2020 – Feb 2021. Check out some of the pages from the book below –

There is also a more recent exhibition of her work been held at the Hyogo Prefectural Museum Of Art titled ‘I-Design’ ( 石岡瑛子Iデザイン ) from September to December 2024, and it also comes with an art catalogue. I hope to pick up in the near future for a review as well, even though I suspect the contents will have a fair amount of overlap with the one for Blood, Sweat, And Tears.

I realized that Ishioka had also worked with Tarsem before on THE CELL, one of the most beautiful films I’d ever seen…while being one of the most disturbing!
She truly was one of a kind, and she missed.

Marc – Yes, I definitely need to re-watch some of Tarsem Singh’s films like The Fall, there was a 4K restoration done recently and I’m hoping it will get a physical media release as well.
