Industrial Light & Magic : The Art of Innovation is an extensively illustrated oral history of the multiple Academy Award winning visual effects company founded by George Lucas in 1975. The book focuses on the company’s work during the last 16 years, detailing its creative and technological innovations on films like Pirates of the Carribean, Star Trek, Transformers, Ironman and many more.

Most of the visuals and pictures found in the book will be familiar to movie goers; its the images focusing on the making of and behind the scenes documentation that are the most valuable and insightful, complemented by anecdotes and stories from some of the most talented visual effects supervisors working in the field today like Dennis Muren, John Knoll, Scott Farrar and many more.

I personally found interviews with the visual effects /animation supervisors, digital matte artists the most inspiring of all. Sure, coverage on the technological advancements in CG are important and interesting to know, but things become obsolete really fast in this industry. The accumulated experience, knowledge and creative problem solving skills that these ILM artists have built however, are golden and will always be the primary driving force behind the magical visual effects that we will yet see in many a film to come.
