‘Talk About Films And Posters’ ( a very literal but not altogether incorrect translation from the Japanese title 映画とポスターのお話 ) is a collection of film poster art pieces by Japanese illustrator Yuko Higuchi ( ヒグチユウコ ) and graphic designer Oshima Idea; ( 大島依提亜 pronounced E-deh-ah ) check out his beautiful design for this Japanese 4K edition of Luc Besson’s LEON.
I had previously reviewed another of Yuko Higuchi’s art books Circus and had been particularly impressed by her illustrations for movie posters, so this book is definitely a very welcomed one. It collects over 40 pieces of her movie illustrations for films like Midsommar ( quite possibly her most famous piece and also featured as the book’s cover art ), Suspiria, Moonlight, Nausicaa, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, The Dark Crystal, Lamb, Last Night In Soho and many more.
The artist’s choice and/or liking in movies seem to find her picking more indie, arthouse and horror/thriller type of films to create posters for, although the occasional more mainstream title is present as well ( like Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood ).
A most excellent collection of edgy looking alternative movie posters that look and feel very different from the more commonly seen photo-montaged type movie posters we see in cinemas. I’ve always liked Yuko Higuchi’s illustrations, especially her work for movie poster art, so this was an easy purchase for me, and a nice surprise is that the book is in a sturdy hardcover format too, making it much more durable for long term appreciation. Recommended.

I love this. So cool that the Canadian 4K release of Midsommar has his illustration on the cover, I may have to get it at some point. (the main reason I wouldn’t order those beautiful A24 store editions is they don’t offer combo packs)

oops, the Midsommar illustration was by Yuko Higuchi–
anyway, cool book. I may want to pick this up, it would make a great companion piece to The Art of Mondo.
