Yukinobu Hoshino is a Japanese manga artist most known for his sci-fi manga series 2001 Nights. Recipient of the Tezuka award ( Harukanaru Asa ) for Outstanding Manga, the artist is renowned for his dramatic compositions illustrated in the Gekiga style.
This hardcover art book commemorates 40 years of illustration work by Yukinobu Hoshino and collects some of his very best works spread across 128 pages, including titles like 2001 Nights, Professor Munakata, Kotetsu No Queen, Rainman, Legend Of The Galactic Heroes and more.
(above) A cover art from The Folklore Studies of Professor Munakata. The background art features the famous Senbon Torii ( The Thousand Torii Gates ) at the Fushimi-Inari Shrine in Kyoto.
Yukinobu Hoshino’s dramatic compositions and bold use of color really appeals to me, the Gekiga illustration style which seems more common during the 80s and less often seen these days. This book is a perfect retrospective of the artist’s best works and comes recommended.
