Yasuo Ōtsuka (大塚康生 1931-2021) was a veteran Japanese animator who worked with Toei Animation, TMS Entertainment, and Studio Ghibli. Considered to be one of Japan’s foremost animators, he was an important mentor to both Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata.
With a passion for sketching military & civil engineer vehicles since young, Yasuo Otsuka used his in-depth knowledge to design and incorporate these vehicles into many of the Lupin animated films, and a great collection of the illustrations are featured in this art book. His expertise also garnered the attention of popular Japanese toy and model makers like Tamiya, who hired him to illustrate the marketing art work for their products, and these are also showcased here.
Although he is no longer with us, Yasuo Otsuka’s creative legacy will live on through his endearing illustrations, and this art book is an excellent volume and collection to celebrate and appreciate his beautiful mechanical art works. Recommended.

I love the caricature quality of the military equipment art. And this definitely makes me want to re-watch the blu-ray of Castle of Cagliostro again, too. Sad to see he passed away this year but what a great long life of animation.
This is the type of artbook that I really would love to see in English (speaking as an English speaker of course!).

Chris – Even though I can read Japanese somewhat adequately, I won’t mind an English edition of the book as well ! :]
