Arguably the weakest entry in the three animated Patlabor feature films ever created, Patlabor The Movie 3 still contains enough “Patlabor” material to keep me interested, which is why I picked this up during my time in Tokyo earlier this year.
This art book ( one of three to be released for this film, I think ) contains more character, creature, mecha, vehicles and weapons design sheets than you can shake a stick at. Oddly enough, some settei materials from the OVA series are also included at the end of the book. The only thing missing from the book are color background art plates, something I find lacking in many of the Patlabor art books I own.
(above & below) The creature design for the monster in the film bears a somewhat similar resemblance to the mutated fish beast in Bong Joonho’s The Host film.
Definitely worth checking out if you are a fan of the Patlabor films, with a wealth of settei material spanning over 250 pages. This art book has been out of print for a long time, but used copies can still be found on Amazon Japan and Amazon.com. If you are shopping around in Nakano Broadway and chance upon a copy, don’t miss it either. Recommended.

Indeed. They don’t make anime movies like this no more. 😛

First Patlabor I ever watched. I don’t know why this film gets a lot of flak. It’s faithful to the Patlabor universe, replicates Mamoru Oshii’s atmosphere well and the ending sequence is great imo.

I actually really like this movie a lot, but I had to come to terms with it first. I have to admit I was initially put-off a bit by the fact that it didn’t center around the Patlabor cast. I love Noa, Kanuka Clancy, Shinohara, etc., so much that I had to kind of re-calibrate my expectations. Once I did that, I found I enjoyed the heck out of it on its own terms. I’ve watched it … three times I think now? Most recently when it came out on blu ray in the US, and it has aged very well I think. As hast the whole franchise.

Mark / Chris – WXIII was a totally serviceable Patlabor film for me. It’s probably hard to compare it to the first 2 animated films, as SVII really takes only a supporting role in this film.

I bought this after it came out,and this is my first time know the words settei, it will make a lot easier for me to search online. at first view I feel a little bit disappointed because it doesn’t show the character that I love, and then after the second view, I kinda like know that when it shows from another perspective it makes it a lot interesting.

Gorgeous machinery and background design.
Isn’t this the work of Takashi WATABE ?

He did remarkable art for several works: Otomo’s Memories (mechanical designs), background for Oshii’s Innocence, Metropolis …
Otomo reported that for his manga “The legend of Mother Sarah”, which he wrote, the artist Takumi Nagayasu had difficulty drawing background elements for a science fiction story. Watabe helped on that part.
And I think he contributed also for the notable mechanical designs.
He certainly merits an artbook dedicated to his work.
Meanwhile, I’m trying collecting books of projects where he contributed.
