Witchfinder Omnibus Volume 1 Graphic Novel Review

Sir Edward Grey, also known as the Witchfinder was an occult/paranormal investigator that lived during the 19th century. He is one of the supporting characters in Mike Mignola’s Hellboy universe, and have on multiple occasions aided Hellboy during times of need with his considerable occult powers and knowledge.

Witchfinder can be considered a prequel/spin-off of Hellboy, covering Sir Edward Grey’s missions and adventures during his time as a mortal. This first omnibus edition collects Sir Edward Grey: Witchfinder volumes 1-3, complete with extensive sketchbook section. The artists for the comic ( John Arcudi, Tyler Crook and more ) are frequent contributors to BPRD, which covers Hellboy’s expanded universe and featuring the organization’s “enhanced” agents like Liz Sherman, Abe Sapien and Johann Krauss.

While Mike Mignola does not provide any drawings for the comic itself, there are many of his illustrations he drew for the paperbacks which are used as chapter dividers in this omnibus, and needless to say they all look amazing.

Frequent readers of this blog will know that I love Hellboy, BPRD and the entire “Mignolaverse”, so any additional stories that help expand the mythology of the Hellboy universe is always highly welcomed. Witchfinder provides great backstory to the character Sir Edward Grey, and makes for great reading. I’m definitely looking forward to Vol 2, and this one comes recommended.
