Famed for his iconic creature and character designs utilizing skeletal and skull motifs, Yasushi Nirasawa ( 韮沢靖 ) was a prolific artist that contributed to many Tokusatsu titles like Kamen Rider, Garo, Devilman, Godzilla, Ultraman and more. The artist passed away in 2016 at a relatively young age of 52, and as a result his work received great posthumous attention, with many of his art books selling out and becoming unavailable.
This art book Undead Greenblood collects a splendid collection of the character designs that the artist created for the tokusatsu series Kamen Rider Blade [仮面ライダー剣(ブレイド)] that was released back in 2004, with over 50 different designs featured. It was out of print for a very long time, but is finally reprinted and available once again.
Blood Of Nira’s Creature, yet another of the artist’s art book that I reviewed back in 2017 features a wider collection of his portfolio and is excellent as well, but this book showcases each character design on a full page, and one can really marvel in the glorious and delicious details of Nirasawa’s exquisite illustration and designs. This was one of the quips that I had with Nira’s Creature ( illustrations that were too small ), and I’m glad that it is resolved in this book !
While it is tragic that Yasushi Nirasawa is no longer with us, his amazing creature and character designs will continue to inspire artists for a long time to come. This book is a fantastic showcase of his designs for Kamen Rider, with big and bold prints and comes highly recommended.
