Tokyo Skytree – A Schematic Picture Book documents the planning and construction of Japan’s tallest structure through the wonderful illustrations of Japanese artist Morinaga Yo, who also bought us the illustrated books on the Tsukiji Fish Market as well as the Tank Primer.
The lively and highly detailed watercolor drawings takes us through Tokyo Skytree’s various stages of construction from start to completion, aided with diagrams and annotations that illustrate the engineering challenges faced in the building of such a massive structure.
(above & below) A comparison with some other famous towers/buildings in the world; Tokyo Skytree is actually the 2nd tallest structure ( circa 2017 ) in the world after the Burj Khalifa in Dubai.
I’ve only ever seen Tokyo Skytree from a distance ( and it looks very impressive ) but I think I’m actually going to visit it this summer, thanks in part to this book.
I really enjoy Morinaga Yo’s style of illustration and I still have a couple of his art books to get to. This one comes highly recommended; also check out his book on the Tsukiji Fish Market.
