With the release of this storyboard book for Tokyo Godfathers, Japanese publisher Fukkan has now completed release of all the 4 four feature films ( Perfect Blue, Millenium Actress, Paprika ) from the late director Satoshi Kon. Indeed, this book was actually published on the 8th anniversary of his passing ( 24th August 2010 ), and was meant perhaps as a tribute to the director.

At 664 pages, this is by far the biggest of the 4 storyboard books. Besides the full collection of production storyboards for the film, there’s also a considerable section of supplementary materials at the end of the book that touches on genga and other animation techniques used for the film, as well as the usual medley of colored illustrations ( images below ) at at the front of the book.

No substantial art book has ever been released for Tokyo Godfathers. There’s the Angel Book, but that’s more of a lite “visual guide”, so this storyboard book is definitely great news for fans of the film.

Tokyo Godfathers is the most light-hearted film among Satoshi Kon’s 4 movies, and my 2nd favorite after Millenium Actress. This storyboard book is both a great study resource for those interested in Kon’s composition techniques, and is also a great way to enjoy his beautiful drawings. My highest recommendations.
