The Wes Anderson Collection : The French Dispatch Book Review

The French Dispatch (titled onscreen as The French Dispatch of the Liberty, Kansas Evening Sun) is a 2021 American anthology comedy drama film written, directed, and produced by Wes Anderson from a story he conceived with Roman Coppola, Hugo Guinness, and Jason Schwartzman. It features an expansive ensemble cast and follows three different story-lines as the French foreign bureau of the fictional Liberty, Kansas Evening Sun newspaper publishes its final issue.

Certainly one of the biggest highlights of any Wes Anderson production are the meticulously designed and crafted sets and props, all set-dressed to frame perfection, and this making of book is a delightful showcase of all this beautiful art direction through plenty of behind-the-scenes photographs and art work, including a big collection of cover art ( by artist Javi Aznarez ) for the fake newspaper publication The French Dispatch, perhaps a nod to the real-life cover art work for The New Yorker magazine.

Book synopsis – The official behind-the-scenes companion to The French Dispatch and the latest volume in the bestselling Wes Anderson Collection series.

Everything that goes into bringing Anderson’s trademark style, meticulous compositions, and exacting production design to the screen is revealed in detail in this beautifully designed book.

Written by film and television critic and New York Times bestselling author Matt Zoller Seitz, The Wes Anderson Collection: The French Dispatch presents the complete story behind the film’s conception, anecdotes about the making of the film, and behind-the-scenes photos, production materials, and artwork.

The French Dispatch—the tenth feature film from writer-director Wes Anderson—is a love letter to journalists set at the titular American newspaper in the fictional 20th-century French city of Ennui-sur-Blasé. The film stars a number of Anderson’s frequent collaborators, including Bill Murray as the newspaper’s editor in chief; Owen Wilson, Tilda Swinton, and Frances McDormand, as well as new players Jeffrey Wright, Benicio del Toro, Elisabeth Moss, and Timothée Chalamet, who bring to life a collection of stories published in The French Dispatch magazine.

I’m a pretty big fan of Wes Anderson’s films, in no small part due to the meticulous attention he pays to craft fascinating worlds that are as visually stunning as they are narratively engaging. This book is a wonderful celebration and exploration of his unique style of filmmaking and makes for a perfect companion to the film. Recommended.
